मोची की व्यथा ( cobbler’s agony) by Lalchand Rahi
फटे जूते-सी Similar to torn shoes
ज़िन्दगी सीने के लिए (his) Life is to sew or mend
चमड़ा काटता है वह He (cobbler) cuts the leather
किसी की जेब या गला नहीं He never picks pocket (rob) or
cuts anybody’s throat for money.
पॉलिश करने से पहले Before polishing shoes
दो कीलें भी ठोकता है He hits two nails
दो रुपयों के लिए Just for two rupees
एक रुपया टिका कर but the customer gives one rupee
आगे बढ़ जाता है ग्राहक and moves foreward
उसके सीने में कीलें ठोककर hammering nails into his (cobbler’s)
chest.
मजूरी पूरी न मिलने पर in case of not getting full wages
चीख़ता है वह He screams
जाते हुए सवर्ण पर at the upper castes who are on their
way
रुआँसा-हताश हो weeping and hopelessly
बुदबुदाता है वह he murmers
‘रे राम ‘Hey Ram
आज कितनी कीलें सहनी होंगी How many nails will I have to bear
(on my chest) today
साँझ तक?’ till everning?’
